Resident Jay Walters wants you to slow down not just for a group of walkers on Wednesday as they take their first steps from George K. Pinney County Park in Sevastopol, but all the time.

Wednesday’s Safety Awareness Walk is the latest effort by Neighbors for Safe Bay Shore Drive to bring attention to concerns about drivers traveling too quickly on the road, which frequently has pedestrians and cyclists enjoying the scenic 13-mile stretch.

In the past, residents have collected data showing drivers traveling between 30 and 60 mph above the posted speed limit. Neighbors have poured approximately $18,000 into efforts to make Bay Shore Drive a safer place to recreate.

Walters has advocated for a safer Bay Shore Drive and says progress has been made thanks to recent work to widen the shoulders, collaborations with local law enforcement, and other efforts to raise awareness. However, he believes more can be done.

Walters encourages participants to wear high-visibility clothing and bring signs encouraging people to “slow the pace, enjoy the place.”
