One last hurrah is planned for this season for the group working to restore the catwalk to the Algoma Pierhead Light in Algoma, with an Oktoberfest on October 17 at the Algoma Boat Club.
Fundraising efforts by the Save the Catwalk group have totaled $50,892 as of October 14, with an additional $8,700 in donated goods and services. Also included are a $1,000 grant from the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, and a $1,000 grant from Algoma Utilities and the WPPI Foundation.
The Save The Catwalk group set a fundraising goal of $400,000, to be reached by the end of 2027.
Fundraising efforts began in early 2026, with a successful summer event, similar to the upcoming Oktoberfest, according to Jacqueline Toepfer, treasurer of the group Save The Catwalk.
In addition to the food and drinks at the Oktoberfest event, raffles and auctions will be hosted. Toepfer talked with Paige Funkhouser about the efforts to restore and save one of Wisconsin's last two remaining pierhead catwalks on Lake Michigan (the other being Sturgeon Bay).
