Travelers heading to or from Washington Island on Friday will need to adjust their plans due to expected high winds.
The Washington Island Ferry Line has canceled all Friday afternoon and evening trips because of the forecast. On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a gale warning from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Winds of 20 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots, are expected to produce waves of 4 to 7 feet on the bay and 6 to 10 feet on Lake Michigan. The strong winds and hazardous waves could reduce visibility and potentially damage or capsize boats.
During this time of year, the Washington Island Ferry Line operates hourly trips between the mainland and the island from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., along with two evening trips.
Ferry officials are expected to decide whether to operate Friday morning trips later Thursday.
