Launching a boat, renting a shelter, and setting off fireworks are just some of the activities that could cost a little more in the city of Sturgeon Bay following discussions during Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.
The city's alders will discuss increasing or establishing fees for services provided by the Fire Department, Municipal Services, City Hall, and Community Development Department.
Under the proposal, daily boat launch passes would increase by $2, while seasonal passes would increase by approximately $5 to $10. Shelter rental fees would increase by $10 to $44, depending on the shelter's size and the renter's residency status. Pet licenses for dogs and cats would increase by $7, regardless of whether the animals are spayed or neutered. A complete list of the proposed fees is included in Tuesday's agenda packet.
The proposed fees were developed during budget meetings in which city staff were asked to review options for covering expenses.
The discussion is part of a broader review of the 2027 budget, which will also take place during Tuesday's meeting. The council hopes to schedule a budget hearing for its Nov. 3 meeting.
According to minutes from the Oct. 5 Committee of the Whole meeting, City Administrator Josh VanLieshout said the proposed tax rate would increase by 8.5% to 11% under the current budget proposal.
In addition to delaying filling vacancies in the police and municipal services departments, eight items were removed from the 2027 budget to reduce the capital levy, with $204,500 directed to the debt service levy.
Tuesday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at Sturgeon Bay City Hall.
