Corn harvest, winter wheat planting fall behind average pace

While the soybean harvest surged ahead over the past week, Wisconsin farmers found themselves behind in other areas, thanks in part to Mother Nature.

According to the USDA Crop Progress and Condition Report released earlier this week, farmers had 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork, down from 6.1 days the previous week. Rain and the state's first hard frost of the season contributed to the slowdown.

Despite the weather, the soybean harvest jumped from 54% complete to 72%, putting it 9 percentage points ahead of the five-year average.

Farmers are trying to catch up in their corn and wheat fields. The corn harvest for grain is 5 percentage points behind the five-year average at 24% complete, while winter wheat planting and emergence are both more than 10 percentage points behind their respective averages. Winter wheat planting is 73% complete, while 47% of the crop has emerged.

The weather could help farmers make progress over the next week, with a 20% or lower chance of showers through next Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
