For the first time since July, the USS Silversides is docked in Muskegon, Michigan, after spending the summer in Sturgeon Bay. The World War II submarine was towed back to its home port overnight after leaving Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding at approximately 4 p.m. Friday.
It was only the second time the USS Silversides had traveled on an open-water trip since arriving in Michigan in 1987. The submarine underwent a $3.5 million restoration to help preserve it as a maritime attraction for decades to come.
The USS Silversides Museum documented the restoration efforts throughout the submarine's stay in Sturgeon Bay, ranging from zebra mussel removal to the addition of numerals that had not been seen on the submarine in years.
By 9 a.m. Saturday, the USS Silversides was greeted by onlookers as it returned home. The USS Silversides joins the USS Cobia as one of the submarines that have recently called Sturgeon Bay home for dry-dock work.
