Familiar faces will occupy the 1st District seats in the state Assembly and Senate after Rep. Joel Kitchens and Nic Cravillion posted wins Tuesday night.
Kitchens, a Sturgeon Bay Republican, defeated Kewaunee Democrat Renee Paplham, winning Door County 9,027-8,480 and Kewaunee County 6,149-3,486. While he senses a changing tide in Madison, Kitchens says he appreciates the support he continues to receive in the 1st District.
Newly elected state Sen. Nic Cravillion is no stranger to election night victories after working for retiring state Sen. Andre Jacque. However, this was the first time his name appeared on the ballot. Although he lost Door County to independent candidate Mark Becker 8,925-8,097, the rest of the district followed Kewaunee County's lead, where Cravillion won 6,410-3,090.
While the 1st District went red, much of the state went blue, with Democrats David Crowley (governor), Josh Kaul (attorney general), Jocasta Zamarripa (secretary of state) and Yee Leng Xiong (treasurer) heading toward victories shortly before 10 p.m.
In the U.S. House, Rep. Tony Wied captured a second term, with The Associated Press calling the race in his favor shortly before 10 p.m. in his contest against Democratic challenger Rick Crosson.
