Edmund V. Schmidt

Category: Obituaries

Edmund "Ed" Victor Schmidt, 87, of Jacksonport, passed away at his home on July 26, 2026. He was born May 24, 1939, in Chicago, IL, the son of Adolph and Anna (Klauke) Schmidt. Ed's family moved to Door County in 1951, settling into the Jacksonport home they had built over the previous several years. He spent part of his primary education in the one-room schoolhouse in Jacksonport and graduated from Sevastopol High School with the class of 1957. Ed joined the United States Navy, where he trained in electronics. He served aboard U.S. destroyers in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, and his service gave him the opportunity to explore several European countries. After completing four years in the military, Ed was hired by Beltone Hearing Aid Company. While working, he pursued a degree in electronic engineering over several years. He later joined Zenith Corporation, where he managed the parts engineering and testing group. After more than 30 years with Zenith, he retired to Jacksonport, returning to the home he and his parents had built further back on their property. Ed loved to travel and explore. He camped in Alaska, Australia, and New Zealand; cruised throughout Europe; and visited nearly all of the national and state parks in the United States. Ed volunteered at Maifest and later served as president of the Jacksonport Advancement Corporation for several years. He was a member of Sturgeon Bay V.F.W. #3088, where he served in various positions, including commander. He also contributed to the Jacksonport Fire Department, not as a firefighter, but by helping wherever needed. For many years, Ed drove a van for the Red Cross, transporting people to appointments in Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay. A lifelong battle with back arthritis made walking difficult in his later years. He donated generously to charities supporting animals, medical research, food distribution, and surgeries for people in poverty around the world. Ed was a member of Stella Maris Parish and remained close to family, friends, and the Jacksonport community throughout his life. Ed will be greatly missed by his brother, Joseph Schmidt, of Schaumburg, IL; brother-in-law, John Gagnon, of Jacksonport; four nieces, Annette (Tim) Klare, of Waukesha, WI, Carol Gagnon, of Tamarac, FL, Christine (Alex) Giles, of Fort Pierce, FL, and Nicole (Jim) Fox, of Port Townsend, WA; the nieces' children, Allison, Alex Giles IV, Sam, and Thomas; cousins, Arlene Furlong, of Wilmette, IL, Edward Furlong, of Delavan, WI, and Charlotte (John) Sprenger, of Chicago, IL; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elizabeth Gagnon; niece, Mary Gagnon; and his nephew-in-law, Alex Giles III.

Ed's life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial at Stella Maris Parish-Jacksonport site on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. He will be laid to rest at St. Michael's Cemetery in Jacksonport with military honors. A luncheon will follow at the Jacksonport Town Hall. Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC in Sturgeon Bay are assisting the Schmidt family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Ed may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.
